Initially developed in partnership by Greyfriars Kirk and the Grassmarket mission, Grassmarket Community Project (GCP) was formed as a standalone charity in 2010.

With its roots in working with people who were traditionally homeless, GCP has broadened its work to include people who experience mental/physical health issues and learning support needs.

  • Grassmarket community project

Grassmarket Community Project takes an innovative approach to creating community cohesion and provides sanctuary and support to its members, including mentoring, training and education in a nurturing environment. GCP operates four enterprises which support and include the people it works with, consisting of a conference and events space, a community café, woodwork project and a tartan textiles social enterprise. GCP also offers a range of social integration and educational activities for members aimed at enhancing life skills and developing confidence. These include cookery and baking classes, art, drama, IT, reading and writing, sewing and photography.

During their time as members of Social Firms Scotland, GCP has accessed numerous services including the provision of templates on Policies and Procedures, a study visit to fellow SFS member Haven PTS, and inclusion in a Social Firms Scotland promotional film. They have also had the chance to host overseas visitors from Sweden and Denmark.

Representatives of GCP have also attended a free intellectual property workshop coordinated by SFS, their venue, café, woodwork shop and brilliant Greyfriars Tartan has been promoted via the bi-weekly bulletins and Twitter.
